On behalf of the organizing team of the 4th National Conference for Indian Society of Histocompatability and Immunogenetics, we invite you all to participate in “ISHICON 2016”, which is scheduled to be held on 2nd-3rd December, 2016 at PGIMER, Chandigarh.
The main themes of this conference are “High Tech Immunogenetics : Focus on Transplantation and strengthening genetic data base of the country” There will also be hands on workshops on “use of luminex platform to improve transplant outcome”, “exploring flowcytometry in improving post transplant patient care”, “tapping next generation sequencing and digital PCR for improving HLA diagnostics” and “automated PCR - SSP methods for enhanced diagnostic output”.
All interested experts and students will get a platform to network and learn from each other and directly from the global experts.

For Pre Conference Hands-on Workshop

Participants can choose one workshop from forenoon and one from afternoon session. They will be allowed to attend the clinical and technical aspects for both sessions. However, for the hands on workshop, one preference should be clearly mentioned. Participation in the hands on session of the second workshop will only be made available on first come basis, as the number of participants for Hands on session is limited to 20 for each. Fee for the entire Pre-conference workshop session is INR 5000.

Guidelines for abstract submission


General guidelines :

  • Word limit: 250 words (Excluding Title, Authors, and Affiliations)
  • Font: Times New Roman (12 size, Title in Bold)
  • Authors’ Name: Full Names, Name of the presenting author should be underlined
  • Affiliations: Complete Address of the institute
  • Email : Email id of presenting author

Abstract structure :

All abstracts, without exception, should be structured as follows:

  • Background: should very briefly indicate the purpose and objective of the research.
  • Methods: should include clear, concise descriptions of experiments performed, including the controls used for the study and methods of analysis used.
  • Results: should present the experimental data.
  • Conclusions: should summarize the significance of the study based on the results, with future implications, if any.

Faculty ISHICON 2016

Dimitrios S Monos

Director of Immunogenetics laboratory at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and Professor of Pathology and Lab Medicine at Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania, USA.

Dr. Monos’s research interests cover a wide spectrum of HLA-related topics. His lab has pioneered the DNA-based methodologies for HLA typing and more recently the introduction of Next Generation Sequencing in the field of Immunogenetics, worked on a number of structure/function relationships of HLAs, contributed in identifying the exact structural elements on the different HLA molecules associated with several autoimmune diseases and through genome-wide association studies identify additional genomic regions associated with autoimmunity.

Dr Kay Poulton

PhD, FRCPath, Chair, BSHI Director, Transplantation Laboratory, Manchester Royal Infirmary, United Kingdom

Kay Poulton is the Director of the Transplantation Laboratory in Manchester Royal Infirmary, where she has been a Consultant Clinical Scientist since 2000. The laboratory is one of the largest and busiest in the UK, and it supports a full range of haematopoietic stem cell and solid organ transplants including Kidney, Kidney and Pancreas, as well as Thoracic Organs. As the workload has increased in the UK in recent years, the laboratory has investigated ways of improving efficiency and maximising its resources. The introduction of Virtual Crossmatching has been part of this change in practice. Kay has been the Chair of the BSHI since 2014, and is currently also a member of the European Federation for Immunogenetics Executive Committee. She is an EFI Accreditation inspector, and has a longstanding interest in raising standards in H&I laboratories worldwide.

Medhat Askar

MD, PhD, MSHPE, FRCPath (London), D(ABHI), D(ABMLI), HCLD(ABB), Professor, Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, Texas A&M College of Medicine & Director of Transplant Immunology, Baylor University Medical Center, Dallas, TX, USA.

After completing his MD and PhD (Cairo, Egypt) he trained in transplant immunology at Thomas Starzl Transplantation Institute (Pittsburgh, PA). He is a passionate educator (with a Masters in Health Education) who has published and given many lectures on various topics of histocompatibility, transplant immunology, laboratory accreditation and medical education to multi-disciplinary healthcare professionals at various stages of their careers. He is a councilor of The Transplantation Society (TTS) and co-Chair of the education Committee of TTS. He is an experienced histocompatibility laboratory Director and current Board Member of the American Society for Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (ASHI). He is the Chair of the American Board of Immunogenetics (ABHI) Diplomat Exam Committee, a member of the ASHI Director Training and Credentialing (DTRC) Committee and a member of ASHI Accreditation Review Board, with expertise in laboratory operations, standards and accreditation. He exchanges experiences with laboratories around the world as an invited speaker and laboratory evaluator, including The TTS Global Alliance for Transplantation Workshop (South Africa, 2013). With a global network of collaborators in transplantation, he is a project leader for the Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) in the 17th International HLA and Immunogenetics Workshop.

Narinder K Mehra

President, Indian Society of Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (ISHI)

Prof. NK Mehra received his Ph.D (Immunology) from All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi. He has pioneered the speciality of Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics in India and hisresearch is focused on the study of immune mediators in organ and bone marrow transplantation; genome diversity of HLA and towards developing MHC based vaccination approaches in tuberculosis and other mycobacterial infections. Prof. Mehra is the 'Founder Secretary General' of the Federation of Immunological Societies of Asia-Oceania (FIMSA) and is currently the Vice President of the Federation. He has several awards and honors to his credit. Amongst these is the S.S. Bhatnagar Award of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research of (CSIR) Govt. of India in 1992, which is considered to be the highest award for science in India.

Mukut Minz

Professor and Head, Department of Renal Transpnat Surgery, Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh.

Professor and Head, Renal Transplant Surgery, Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh, India. A veteran in Kidney Transplant whose reputation precedes him because of his work as a surgeon, an as academician and Researcher. He has performed over 3000 successful Kidney Transplant breaking all boundaries and has numerous popular publication in different fields of medicine. With his vast experience and the best known kidney transplant surgeon in India.

Rajalingam Raja

Professor of Surgery and Director of Immunogenetics and Transplantation Laboratory, University of California, San Francisco, California.

Prof. Rajalingam is the Director of UCSF Immunogenetics and Transplantation Laboratory that provides cutting edge histocompatibility testing service for solid organ and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. Dr. Rajalingam earned Ph.D. in Immunogenetics at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi in 1997. Dr. Rajalingam gained 26 years of experience in studying the basic biology and clinical implications of Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics. He published over 65 peer-reviewed research articles and 25 review articles and book chapters. Dr. Rajalingam current research centers on (i) understanding the molecular basis of alloimmuneresponse in clinical transplantation; (ii) understanding the complex relationship between the functional polymorphism of immunity related genes in human populations and impact on infections, tumor transformation, autoimmune diseases, and allogeneic transplantation.

Ranjana W Minz

Professor, Department of Immunopathology, Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh

Dr. Ranjana W Minz did her MD in pathology from the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh, India. Her areas of interest are autoimmune disorders, transplant immunology, immunogenetics and primary immunodeficiency diseases. She has worked extensively on diseases like Autoimmune hepatitis and SLE and has been involved in tissue typing and pre-transplant work-up of renal transplantation program of the institute for the last 20 years. She has worked on HLA and non-HLA associations of Type I diabetes, celiac disease and autoimmune hepatitis. Her research group is currently involved in molecular mechanisms of transplant rejection, with special emphasis on role of B cells.

Uma Kanga

Scientist II (Grade IV) Department of Transplant Immunology and Immunogenetics All India Institute Of Medical Sciences Ansari Nagar, New Delhi

Dr. Kanga has been working in the area of Histocompatibility, Immunogenetics and transplant Immunology since past 18 years. Her research interests are focused on investigating the genetic diversity of HLA genes in Indian population, understanding association of HLA genes with diseases like type 1 diabetes, autoimmune thyroiditis, spondilitis, epilepsy, vitiligo, etc and investigation genetic and immunological factors influencing outcome of transplants. She has made significant contribution towards development and expansion of the Asian Indian Bone Marrow registry (AIDMR), which is the first and only Indian volunteer donor registry.

Manni Luthra Guptasarma

Professor, Department of Immunopathology, Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh.

Professor Manni Luthra Guptasarma has a BSc Honors in Chemistry from Delhi University, an MSc in Biotechnology from IIT Bombay, a PhD in Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry from CCMB, Hyderabad and postdoctoral experience in Protein Chemistry and Protein Engineering from University of Cambridge, UK. Her areas of expertise include molecular and cellular immunology and cell biology. Her current research interests include elucidation of mechanisms and pathways involved in immunopathological diseases such as Ankylosing Spondylitis and Rheumatoid Arthritis, as well as ocular diseases involving fibrosis in the cornea, lens and retina. She uses her background in protein chemistry, protein engineering and phage display technology to create novel enzymological and immunological protein reagents as interventional agents to explore normal and pathological states of cells and tissues.
